To recap, thematic investing is investing into the trends and themes that are shaping the world of today and tomorrow. Rather than investing into specific single stocks, the best way to ensure maximum exposure to the theme is often via an ETF that invests into all companies exposed to the theme. That way, you receive maximum theme exposure and you minimize stock-specific risk. For example, you might select a Cybersecurity ETF that holds many companies in the Cybersecurity space and gives wide reaching exposure to that theme.
- Identify the theme that excites you or that you see really playing out in the years ahead. There are so many exciting ones which we’ll be posting about. Examples could be Ageing Society/Demographic Change, Electric Vehicles or Cybersecurity, as mentioned above.
- Buy a theme ETF to ensure broad exposure and reduce risk. There are many out there in the marketplace for retail investors. For example, if you believe in the future of Robotics seek out a Robotics ETF.
- Keep a long-term outlook! Thematic investing has a long time horizon as structural change takes years, often, to unfold. Time in the market often pays off!
